What is a cookie?

What is a cookie? A cookie is a small text file that is memorized by the computer when a website is visited by a user. The text memorizes information that the website is able to read when consulted a second time. Several of these cookies are necessary in order to keep the website functioning properly. Others are useful to the visitor since they are able to memorize a username or language settings in a secure manner. The advantage to having cookies installed on one’s computer is to avoid entering the same information every time one wants to access a previously visited website.

First-Part and Third-Part Cookies

First-part cookies are those generated and used by the website administrator on the site which the user is navigating. Third-part cookies, for example those installed on a Facebook “Like” button”, are those generated and used by third parties apart from the website administrator of the website being navigated by the user and are based on the contract between the site owner and the relative third party. Advertisers often use these cookies to track user visits on websites that offer their services.

Technical, analytical and profiling cookies

Technical cookies permit the transmission of communication via an electronic communication network or the provision of a service requested by the user. For example, technical cookies automatically recognize the language the user is using, they can facilitate online purchases or they can make home banking procedures less complex and more secure, etc.

Technical cookies are distinguishable by “sessions”, which are automatically cancelled when the browser is closed, or “persistent”, which are those that remain archived in the user’s browser history until the expiration date which is fixed on the PC.

Analytical cookies are those used by the website administrator to collect aggregated data and statistics (for example, the number of website vistors).

Profiling cookies check the user’s navigation by tracking and monitoring the profile of the user such as tastes, habits or consumer habits in order to send personalized commercial offers.

Cookies used by the Overfibers.com website

The Overfibers.com website uses technical “session” cookies and Google Analytics cookies for a statistical analysis of website visits. Profiling cookies are not used.

Overfibers.com has adopted the appropriate tools to reduce the ability to identify users by masking the IP address identifiers. In addition, Overfibers.com has constrained the third party from using cookies outside the realm of the service provision of the website administrator.

It is possible to disable Google Analytics cookies by using a special add-on provided by Google. To install it, click here
